What Is Self-Compassion—and How Do You Practice It?

Self-compassion might sound like a buzzword, but it’s actually a powerful skill that can transform how you relate to yourself, especially when self-esteem feels low.

What is self-compassion?

At its core, self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding, and patience that you would offer a good friend—especially when things get tough. Instead of harsh self-criticism or judgment, you meet your struggles with warmth and acceptance.

Psychologist Kristin Neff, a leading expert in this field, breaks self-compassion down into three parts:

  1. Self-kindness: Being gentle and supportive with yourself rather than self-critical.

  2. Common humanity: Recognizing that everyone struggles and experiences setbacks—you're not alone.

  3. Mindfulness: Being aware of your feelings without over-identifying or getting overwhelmed by them.

Why does self-compassion matter?

When you’re kind to yourself, it helps reduce feelings of shame, anxiety, and self-doubt. It creates space to grow and learn instead of getting stuck in cycles of negative self-talk. Research shows that people who practice self-compassion tend to have healthier self-esteem and better emotional resilience.

How can you practice self-compassion?

  • Notice your inner critic. Pay attention when your thoughts turn harsh or judgmental.

  • Talk to yourself like a friend. What would you say to someone you care about in your situation? Try saying that to yourself.

  • Remember you’re not alone. Remind yourself that struggle is part of the human experience.

  • Practice mindfulness. When difficult feelings arise, breathe into them without pushing them away or exaggerating them.

  • Try self-compassion exercises. For example, place your hand over your heart and say kind phrases like, “This is hard right now, but I’m here for you.”
